The Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office will conduct another insurance checkpoint on Friday, November 25, 2011, during the daylight hours in the southern part of the parish. Along with checking to make sure each vehicle is properly insured, deputies will also be checking to make sure any children in a vehicle are safely and properly restrained.
A total of 297 vehicles passed through the insurance checkpoint held Tuesday, November 15, 2011. Of that total, deputies cited two motorists for having no proof of insurance and one for a seat belt violation.
Motorists who encounter the checkpoint should be prepared to present a valid drivers license and proof of insurance for the vehicle. Any motorists found to not have insurance during the checkpoint will have their license plates removed and could have their vehicle impounded. Per Louisiana statute (R.S. 32:863.1), drivers without insurance have three calendar days (excluding Saturday, Sunday and legal holidays) to provide proof of insurance, or the license plate and auto registration can be destroyed. The reinstatement fee for a first offense is $50.00, a second fee is $150.00 and any subsequent offenses require a $500.00 fee.
