The Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office will conduct an insurance checkpoint on Friday, January 27, 2012, during the daylight hours in the central part of the parish. Along with checking to make sure each vehicle is properly insured, deputies will also be checking to make sure any children in a vehicle are safely and properly restrained.
A total of 197 vehicles passed through the insurance checkpoint held Tuesday, January 17, 2012, on St. Mary Street in Thibodaux, and all were drivers were found to be in compliance.
Motorists who encounter the checkpoint should be prepared to present a valid drivers license and proof of insurance for the vehicle. Any motorists found to not have insurance during the checkpoint will have their license plates removed and could have their vehicle impounded. Per Louisiana statute (R.S. 32:863.1), drivers without insurance have three calendar days (excluding Saturday, Sunday and legal holidays) to provide proof of insurance, or the license plate and auto registration can be destroyed. The reinstatement fee for a first offense is $50.00, a second fee is $150.00 and any subsequent offenses require a $500.00 fee.
