Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported the arrest of a Raceland man and woman on drug charges following a traffic stop Thursday night, April 12. Kenneth Chambers (B/M, D.O.B. 8/11/81) of 103 Charles Avenue and Alexis Shelby (B/F, D.O.B. 12/30/89) of 134 St. Charles Avenue were both taken into custody after deputies found crack cocaine and large amounts of cash in their possession.
On the morning of Thursday, April 12, while traveling northbound on LA Highway 308 in Raceland, an LPSO Patrol Deputy approached a traffic light and while stopped was approached by a concerned citizen who notified the deputy about a white convertible in front of him that had been swerving on the roadway. The deputy pursued the vehicle onto the south LA Highway 182 bridge and continued to pursue him as he turned left onto LA Highway 1 heading southbound. The deputy noticed a cracked tail light lens emitting a white light, and therefore, he initiated a traffic stop due to an improper tail lamp.
Once stopped, the deputy made contact with the driver and identified him as Kenneth Chambers, who had two active warrants for his arrest for Contempt of Court. While placing Chambers under arrest, the deputy noticed the passenger of the vehicle had tossed an unknown item from the passenger-side window. During a pat down for officer safety, the deputy recovered over $200 in cash which Chambers had in his pocket. The deputy then walked over to the passenger side of the vehicle and observed a clear plastic bag on the ground with suspected crack cocaine inside. The deputy then had the passenger exit the vehicle, and as she did, a large amount of cash fell to the floor board of the vehicle.
At that time, Narcotics Agents were then called to the scene to investigate. Upon arrival, deputies handed over approximately $5,200.00 in cash and approximately 5 gross grams of suspected crack cocaine. Through investigation, agents learned Chambers told Shelby to hide the money in her shirt once the deputy had initiated the traffic stop.
Chambers was arrested and charged with Possession with the Intent to Distribute Crack Cocaine, Obstruction of Justice, Improper Tail Lamp and the two aforementioned Contempt of Court charges. He is being held in lieu of $50,050.00 bond as set by Judge John E. Leblanc as well as an additional $698.00 in fines and costs from the two contempt charges. Shelby was arrested for Possession of Crack Cocaine and was released late Thursday night after posting $2,500.00 bond as had been set by Judge Leblanc.
