The Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office will conduct an insurance checkpoint on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, during the daylight hours in the central part of the parish. Along with checking to make sure each vehicle is properly insured, deputies will also be checking to make sure any children in a vehicle are safely and properly restrained.
A total of 500 vehicles passed through the insurance checkpoint held Friday, June 15, 2012, on LA Highway 24 in Grand Bois. During the checkpoint, deputies issued citations for two insurance violations, two child restraint violations, and one switched plate violation.
Motorists who encounter the checkpoint should be prepared to present proof of insurance for the vehicle. Any motorists found to not have insurance during the checkpoint will have their license plates removed and could have their vehicle impounded. Per Louisiana statute (R.S. 32:863.1), drivers without insurance have three calendar days to provide proof of insurance, or the license plate and auto registration can be destroyed. The reinstatement fee for a first offense is $50.00, a second fee is $150.00 and any subsequent offenses require a $500.00 fee.
