Raceland Man Arrested after Agents Recover over $36,000 in Cash and Narcotics

Deon Charles

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported the arrest of a Raceland man after agents recovered over $36,000 in cash and illegal drugs. Deon Charles (B/M, D.O.B. 08/11/80) of 100 Kahn Street was arrested Tuesday on an outstanding contempt warrant, but also faces drug distribution charges after he was found with large amounts of cash and narcotics.

At around 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 21, agents with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force, including narcotics agents from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Thibodaux Police Department, were traveling on Williams Street when they noticed a vehicle being driven by Deon Charles. Charles had an active warrant for contempt of court for failure to appear for a child support hearing. Agents, accompanied by a patrol deputy, initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. As Charles stepped out of the vehicle, agents observed him throw a clear plastic bag to the ground. Agents immediately placed Charles under arrest for the active warrant and noticed him to have white residue, suspected to be crack cocaine, on his clothing. Agents also noticed suspected crack cocaine on the driver’s seat as well as in the plastic bag Charles had thrown to the ground. Presumptive field tests of the substances on the seat and in the bag yielded positive results for the presence of cocaine.

Agents then conducted a pat down search and discovered a large sum of money in Charles’ rear pocket. The total sum of cash was $1,880.00. During a search of Charles’ vehicle, agents discovered additional suspected crack cocaine in the center console. After obtaining a search warrant for Charles’ home, agents also conducted a search there and discovered 33.5gg of additional suspected crack cocaine and 24.55gg of suspected heroin. They also discovered 10 Suboxone strips, a Roxicodone pill and an additional $26,100 in cash.

All told, agents recovered a total of $27,980 in cash and over $8,500 (street value) in illegal narcotics. Charles was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked on the contempt warrant as well as possession with intent to distribute heroin, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute Suboxone, and possession of Roxicodone. He is being held in lieu of $64,500 as set by Judge F. Hugh Larose.
