CHRIS WHEATON:
In the early morning hours of Thursday, September 6, deputies with the Proactive Police Unit observed a vehicle traveling northbound on LA 1 with an inoperable tail lamp. The vehicle then turned onto Morristown Bypass Road traveling at a high rate of speed. The deputies then initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle turned into a residential driveway and immediately exited the vehicle. Deputies immediately recognized and identified the driver as Chris Wheaton (B/M, D.O.B. 08/26/66) of 304 Morristown Bypass Road. Wheaton stated he had no driver’s license and that the vehicle did not belong to him. Wheaton was speaking very loudly and deputies asked him to calm down and lower his voice several times. His eyes appeared glassy, and he was sweating profusely. When deputies asked him if he was under the influence of any narcotics, Wheaton said he was not. A K-9 unit arrived on scene and performed a perimeter sweep of the vehicle Wheaton was driving. The K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicles, and so, deputies conducted a search of the interior of the vehicle. During the search, deputies recovered a white plastic bag containing approximately 29.4 grams of suspected crack cocaine from under the driver’s seat. Deputies placed Wheaton under arrest, and he was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where he was booked with possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine. He is currently being held in lieu of $30,000 bond as set by Judge John Leblanc. Wheaton has an extensive criminal history which includes 33 arrests and 44 prison stays, mostly for charges including burglary, theft, drugs, disturbing the peace and resisting an officer. His most recent stay at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center ended on August 22, 2012 when he was released after serving his most recent sentence for four counts of resisting an officer with force or violence.
