Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported a Raceland man has been arrested in connection to a shooting which occurred on Williams Street in Raceland Tuesday night. Calvin Rhinehart (B/M, D.O.B. 08/19/71) of 325 Ayo Street was arrested shortly after the incident wherein gunfire grazed one mans arm and caused damage to two homes and a motor vehicle in the Alidore community.
At around 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, deputies responded to the report of a possible fight around the 200 block of Williams Street where a large number of subjects had gathered. Deputies arrived and took statements from individuals in the large crowd, but did not see anyone fighting and the crowd was dispersed.
Then nearly 30 minutes later, deputies received reports of multiple shots fired at the same location. Witnesses reported seeing Calvin Rhinehart at the scene with a firearm in his possession before he left the area in a white car. Deputies again responded to the scene and immediately located Rhinehart in the white car. Deputies initiated a traffic stop, identified Rhinehart as the driver, and took him into custody on an active arrest warrant for contempt of court.
Detectives discovered several rounds had been fired, one of which grazed a man on the arm, and others struck a sport-utility vehicle and two residences which were all occupied at the time of the shooting. Through witness statements and evidence collected at the crime scene, detectives believe Rhinehart used a rifle in the commission of the crime. Rhinehart was subsequently charged with attempted second degree murder, three counts of aggravated criminal damage to property, and illegal use of a weapon. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux and was booked on the aforementioned charges, as well as the contempt warrant. He is being held in lieu of $235,000 bond on the charges from the incident as well as an additional $188 cash bond on the contempt warrant.
