Raceland Man Injures Family Member in Shooting Incident

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported the arrest of a Raceland man who fired a rifle round into the ground near a family member, causing minor injuries. Muhammad Abdullah (B/M, D.O.B. 09/02/51) of 215 Sylvester Avenue was arrested Wednesday following an investigation into the incident.

At around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, deputies responded to the Raceland area in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the victim with minor injuries. Deputies learned the victim had gone to visit a family member, Muhammad Abdullah, at his Sylvester Avenue residence. When no one answered the door at Abdullah’s residence, the victim walked toward the rear of the residence where he made contact with Abdullah. The two men began to argue, and at one point, Abdullah allegedly grabbed a rifle threatening to kill him and other family members. Abdullah then allegedly shot at the ground in close proximity to the victim. The victim sustained minor injuries from what detectives believe is a combination of shrapnel and debris from the ground where the projectile struck.

Due to close proximity of the incident to Raceland Lower Elementary School, the school was placed on “lockdown” for a short time, but returned to normal operations soon after the Abdullah was in custody. The lockdown was a precautionary measure, and at no time was anyone at the school in any danger due to this incident.

Abdullah was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and negligent injuring. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center and booked accordingly. He was released early Thursday morning after posting $3,000 bond as had been set by Judge F. Hugh Larose.
