Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced a Golden Meadow man arrested after a traffic stop on Saturday faces additional charges of theft and forgery in an unrelated matter. Damen Smith (W/M, D.O.B. 11/29/78) of 2702 South Bayou Drive in Golden Meadow was arrested on DWI and drug possession charges after he was stopped for speeding early Saturday morning. Additional charges were filed Tuesday after deputies learned he use forged checks at a local auto parts store last month.
During the early morning hours of Saturday, June 22, deputies initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle which was traveling southbound on LA Highway 308 at a rate of 20 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Deputies then made contact with the driver, identified as Damen Smith, and immediately detected the odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicles interior. After Smith voluntarily consented to a search of the vehicle, deputies discovered two small bags of suspected cocaine, six small bags of suspected marijuana, four burnt suspected marijuana cigarettes, and various drug paraphernalia. Deputies also learned Smith had been driving with a suspended license. Smith was showing signs of possible intoxication, and deputies conducted a standardized field sobriety test on which Smith performed poorly. When a breathalyzer test showed he had a blood alcohol content of 0.00g%, Smith submitted to a urinalysis, and the results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. Smith was arrested for DWI (2nd offense), possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under suspension, and speeding.
Then on Tuesday, June 25, deputies responded to a complaint from an auto parts store in Galliano who reported that Smith had allegedly used four checks at their store in May to purchase a total of over $500 in merchandise. The checks were from a closed account that did not belong to Smith, and he later returned five items in exchange for cash. Following the investigation, Smith was booked on additional charges of 4 counts of forgery and five counts of theft. He remains at the Detention Center in lieu of $36,100 bond as set by Judge Jerome J. Barbera III. He is also being held for Louisiana Probation and Parole.
