10-year-old Found with Loaded Gun at Thibodaux Elementary School

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews reported a 10-year-old boy is in custody after bringing a loaded handgun to an elementary school in Thibodaux on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, April 16, administrators at Thibodaux Elementary School learned a student was in possession of a .380 caliber automatic pistol. A School Resource Officer confiscated the weapon after it was located in the student’s school bag. Juvenile detectives responded, and through investigation, they learned the child had allegedly brought the gun to school only to show to his friends. The child’s stepfather is the owner of the gun, and detectives say they do not suspect the juvenile had any intention of firing the weapon or hurting anyone.

The juvenile is currently at the Juvenile Justice Facility in Thibodaux pending a hearing in Thibodaux City Court on Thursday, April 17. Due to the offender’s age, his name is not being released.

Sheriff Webre is warning students that bringing weapons to school will result in serious consequences regardless of anyone’s intentions. “We have zero tolerance for any child bringing a weapon to school for any reason,” said Sheriff Webre. “Regardless of the intent or excuse, bringing a weapon to school could lead to unspeakable tragedy if it ends up in the wrong hands. No excuses will ever be valid because there are always other options to deal with any problem or situation.”

Sheriff Webre encourages gun owners who have children, or who are visited by children, to purchase locking devices for firearms and to store in a location that is secure and preferably out of reach from children. Sheriff Webre also advises storing weapons and ammunition separately.

Superintendent Matthews indicated administrative actions will be taken in accordance with the Lafourche Parish School Board’s discipline policy.
