Cut Off Man Arrested For a Series of Crimes in South Lafourche

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced a Cut Off man is facing several charges following a series of crimes which began Tuesday evening. Joseph Chauvin (W/M, D.O.B. 05/27/86) of 108 West 100th Street was apprehended on Wednesday in a vehicle he had stolen earlier that morning.

At around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, deputies had responded to a theft complaint in Cut Off wherein Joseph Chauvin had allegedly stolen a checkbook from a resident on East 175th Street and over $300 was missing from the bank account. Approximately 30 minutes later, deputies responded to an incident in Galliano wherein an unknown male subject armed with a knife entered through the backdoor of a residence on West 177th Street and demanded any medication in the residence. Detectives also responded, and through investigation, they developed Joseph Chauvin as a suspect in that crime as well and began searching the area for him. During the search, detectives received another complaint that Chauvin had allegedly stolen a cell phone from a vehicle parked at a business near West 177th Street. Deputies and detectives continued searching the area but were unable to apprehend Chauvin at that time.

Then around 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 18, a Galliano resident reported a blue sport-utility vehicle had been stolen from her residence at West 151st Street. A vehicle fitting the description of the stolen SUV was later spotted in the Cut Off area and eventually the driver pulled the vehicle onto the shoulder of LA Highway 3235 in Cut Off. Detectives pulled up behind the vehicle and, after confirming it to be the stolen SUV, activated emergency lights. The driver, later identified to be Chauvin, sped away heading south on LA 3235. Chauvin eventually stopped the vehicle on West 100th Street in Cut Off and was taken into custody. He was found to have drug paraphernalia in his possession. During questioning, Chauvin confessed to committing the crimes.

Chauvin was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked with Armed Robbery, Aggravated Burglary, Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Simple Burglary of a Motor Vehicle, Theft, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Flight from an Officer. He is being held in lieu of $476,000 bond as set by Judge Walter I. Lanier III.
