Vacherie Man Charged with Child Cruelty after Toddler Suffers Broken Nose

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced the arrest of a Vacherie man following an incident which left a toddler with a broken nose. Lance Michael Cortez (22, W/M) admitted to using force on the child who was also left with facial bruising in the incident.

During the late night hours of Thursday, November 6, deputies responded to Ochsner St. Anne General Hospital in Raceland in reference to a toddler being brought to the emergency room with a broken nose and bruising on his face which resembled a hand print. Detectives began an investigation and learned the child’s injuries had allegedly been caused by Lance Cortez, a man known to the child’s mother. Detectives made contact with Cortez on Friday, and during questioning, Cortez denied striking the child but told detectives had grabbed the child’s face at one point to get the child’s attention.

Cortez was arrested and charged with Cruelty to Juveniles with Force/Violence. He was released on Saturday after posting $100,000 bond as set by Judge Walter I. Lanier III.

Due to the nature of the case and the age of the victim, no further details will be released.
