Update: Brother of Chackbay Shooting Victim Charged with Murder

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced a 30-year-old male has been charged with murder after his brother died as a result of a shooting in Chackbay Tuesday evening. Following an investigation, detectives charged Johuan Gasery (30, B/M) of Vacherie with Second Degree Murder in the shooting death of his brother, Rashaud Gasery (22, B/M) of Chackbay.

At around 6:45 p.m., deputies responded to a shooting at Rashaud Gasery’s residence. Gasery had been struck in the arm by a single round which continued through to his chest. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where he was later pronounced dead. Johuan Gasery was also on scene and told deputies he accidentally shot his brother, and he was detained for questioning.

Detectives arrived and began processing the scene for evidence. Following the investigation at the scene, detectives questioned Gasery about the incident. Gasery told detectives he and his brother were engaged in a verbal altercation outside the residence when his brother punched him. He admitted to pulling out a handgun at that point and firing one shot into the ground. Gasery told detectives the gun then accidentally fired as he tried to throw it to the ground. Detectives found Gasery’s account of the incident to be inconsistent with evidence recovered at the scene as well as his brother’s wounds. Through investigation, detectives learned the shots occurred at two separate locations and believe that Rashaud Gasery was fleeing from his brother, Johuan, during the shooting.

Johuan Gasery was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux and booked with Second Degree Murder. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bond as set by Judge Jerome J. Barbera.
