Parish Officials Urge the Public to Refrain from Dumping and Littering at Boat Launches

Trash dumped last week at Sanchez Boat Launch in Choctaw

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph are reminding residents of litter laws, especially those aimed at preventing dumping at public boat launches. Through the years, littering and illegal dumping of trash has become an increasingly bigger problem at the many public boat launches dotting the Lafourche Parish landscape.

“We want to remind those boating and fishing on our lakes and bayous not to leave their trash at the launch,” said President Randolph. “The public is allowed to use these launches free of charge, and it’s a shame that some people have such little respect as to leave their trash behind. We simply ask that you properly dispose of your trash so it does not become a problem for the next citizen who utilizes the launch.”

Other than boaters leaving trash behind, Sheriff Webre said camp owners sometimes bring bagged garbage to the launch, and others are traveling to boat launches for the sole purpose of dumping trash. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office continues to tenaciously pursue anyone committing a crime at a boat launch, and Sheriff Webre says crimes such as littering and dumping are no exception.

“It’s hard for any of us to understand why people would want to pollute the very environment they are enjoying for recreation,” said Sheriff Webre. “We want boaters and parish visitors to want to return to these boat launches, but no one wants to return to a dump site.

Lafourche Parish Government is currently working on placing signage indicating surveillance cameras are present as well as future signs reading, “NO DUMPING.” These signs are being placed to remind residents about littering and dumping laws, while also letting them know the site is being monitored.

Officials are also encouraging those who utilize the launch to remind their fellow citizens at the launch to properly dispose of their trash. Use trash receptacles where available. If trash receptacles are full or otherwise unavailable, citizens are kindly asked to bag their trash and dispose of it at their home instead of leaving it on the ground or dumping it into the water.
