Sheriff Craig Webre announced the arrest of Patrice Arcement (age 29) and Joseph Thomas (age 32), both of Thibodaux, on Tuesday, September 29. At around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, deputies responded to a complaint wherein a small child had been seen walking along Talbot Avenue in Thibodaux. A woman used her vehicle to block traffic and took the unsupervised child into her care until deputies arrived. Members of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Police Social Services Section arrived with fresh diapers, a car seat and other items for the four-year-old boy who was then transported to a local hospital for a medical evaluation.
Meanwhile, with help from area residents, deputies were able to discover the boy’s residence in Solar Trailer Park, and they found the front door ajar with no one inside. Shortly after 11 a.m., the boy’s mother, Patrice Arcement, arrived on scene and was made aware of the incident. During questioning, investigators learned Arcement and the boy’s father, Joseph Thomas, decided to leave the 4-year-old boy at home to run errands. Arcement and Thomas were arrested and booked into the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux with one count each of Child Desertion. Both have since been released after posting $5,000 bond each.
Sheriff Webre thanked the woman who reported the incident. “We want to extend our sincerest gratitude to the concerned citizen who rescued this child,” said Sheriff Webre. “She cared for him until help arrived, and stayed with him even after that. Her selflessness and kind-hearted nature should be an example to all citizens and a reminder about the outstanding community in which we live.”
