Raceland Man Deserts Unrestrained Child after Evading Traffic Stop

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced the arrest of Herbert Simmons (age 40) of Raceland during the early morning hours of Thursday, November 3. Simmons was wanted in connection with an incident which occurred on Wednesday, October 26.

At around 2:30 p.m. on October 26, deputies traveling on St. Louis Street in Raceland observed the driver of a white pickup truck fail to stop at a stop sign before turning onto Market Street. Deputies attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver of the truck, later identified as Simmons, ignored deputies and continued on Market Street at a high rate of speed, attempting to evade the deputies. Simmons eventually stopped the vehicle in the 500 block of St. Louis Street where he exited the vehicle with what was later determined to be an alcoholic beverage, and he fled on foot. A deputy pursued Simmons but was unable to apprehend him at that time. Meanwhile, another deputy inspected the vehicle and found Simmons had left behind a female passenger and a toddler who had been unrestrained inside the vehicle. Following an investigation, deputies obtained warrants for Simmons’ arrest for Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Resisting an Officer, Child Desertion, Possession of Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle, a stop sign violation, and improper child restraint. He also had outstanding warrants for two counts of Contempt of Court.

Then at around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 3, deputies observed Simmons while patrolling St. Louis Street. Deputies made contact with Simmons, and he was taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where he was booked on the aforementioned charges. His bond is set at $57,900.
