Accreditation History

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office first became accredited by CALEA in 2000.  The LPSO Work Release Center achieved ACA accreditation in 2004.  Both designations remain in good standing to this day.

CALEA

The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) is an independent accrediting authority developed in 1979 by the four major law enforcement executive associations, who represent about 80-percent of the United States law enforcement profession.  CALEA was established for two reasons: to develop a set of law enforcement standards, and to establish and administer an accreditation process through which law enforcement agencies could demonstrate voluntarily that they meet professional recognized criteria for excellence in management and service delivery.

ACA

The American Correctional Association is the oldest and largest International correctional association in the world.  ACA serves all disciplines within the corrections profession and is dedicated to excellence in every aspect of the field.

Accreditation Goals

The following is an excerpt from CALEA Online 5-30-2008

CALEA provides credentialing services for law enforcement agencies, public safety communications agencies, and public safety training academies.  The CALEA Accreditation Process is a proven modern management model;  once implemented, it presents the CEO, on a continuing basis, with a blueprint that promotes the efficient use of resources and improves service delivery - regardless of the size, geographic location, or functional responsibilities of the agency.

Agencies can realize the following rewards of CALEA Accreditation:

·         Comprehensive, well thought-out written directives

·         Reports and analyses to make informed management decisions

·         Preparedness Program in place

·         Improved relationship with the community

·         Strengthen agency's accountability

·         Limit liability and risk exposure

·         Assists in agency's pursuit of excellence

Standards set by ACA reflect practical up-to-date policies and procedures, and function as a management tool for more than 1,500 correctional agencies in the United States.  Approximately 80 percent of all state departments of corrections and youth services are active participants.  Also included are programs and facilities operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the private sector.
