Correctional Officer

Starting Salary - $32,400/yr. ($26,400 base + $6,000 State Supplemental) Higher base salaries are possible based on previous law enforcement experience and paid incentives based on college education, military service, law enforcement related certifications, etc. A correctional officer works rotating 12-hour shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays. Duties include the following: Conducting regular inspections of cell blocks, Insuring the safety and security of inmates, Photographing and booking inmates, Supervising inmate activities, Insuring inmates maintain sanitary living conditions.

Communications Deputy

Starting Salary - $32,400/yr. ($26,400 base + $6,000 State Supplemental) P.O.S.T. Certification is required and applicants must be capable of working 12-hour rotating shifts, days, nights, weekends and holidays. Communications employees not seeking P.O.S.T. Certification will begin at $7.50/hr. and will work a 40 hr. week. Higher base salaries are possible depending on previous law enforcement experience and paid incentives based on college education, military service, law enforcement related certifications, etc. Essential duties are police and fire dispatch, call taking, tracking calls for service and tracking field units using a Computer Aided Dispatch system. Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent, well organized, good communications skills, ability to type 30 words per minute accurately, must have the ability to think and act quickly, calmly, and appropriately in emergency situations.  


 
Deputy

Starting Salary - $32,400/yr. ($26,400 base + $6,000 State Supplemental) Higher base salaries are possible based on previous law enforcement experience and paid incentives based on college education, military service, law enforcement related certifications, etc. Prior to becoming a Patrol Deputy, an employee may be required to work as a Correctional Officer for a period of time and must obtain P.O.S.T. Certification. A deputy is responsible for the efficient performance of required duties conforming to the rules, regulations, and general orders of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office. Duties include the following: Identifying criminal offenders and criminal activities, Apprehending offenders, Preventive patrolling, Traffic control, Promoting and preserving the peace.

Clerical

$7.50/hr. There are several clerical positions within the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office. The above hourly rate, however, is commensurate with education and experience. Duties include the following: Typing, Filing, Operating the switchboard, Operating the computer, Assisting the public in payment of fines, taxes and tickets.

$10/hr. School guards must be at least 18 years of age and have completed a two-hour training program regarding proper traffic control techniques.

Reserve Officer

This is a volunteer position and is a non-paying position. There are 3 levels of Reserves. (All training costs are borne by the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office).

Level 1 – Auxiliary – requires 24 hours of orientation to the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office. During these 24 hours, the Auxiliary will not only learn the policy and the procedures of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office but also its mission and its structure. It shall be the obligation of the Auxiliary Reserve Officer’s supervisor to see that officers under his/her supervision have 16-20 hours of training appropriate to their job descriptions. The Auxiliary Officer can perform non-enforcement duties such as: teaching, data processing, ride-alongs, The Auxiliary Officer must work a minimum of 6 hours per month to be in “good standing.” The Auxiliary Officer may also join the Louisiana Association of Reserve Peace Officers (LARPO) and try out for LPSO Reserve Pistol Team if he/she is certified in firearms.

Level 2 – Intermediate Reserve – requires 140 hours of training and can perform enforcement duties. The Intermediate Reserve Officer will be certified in firearms, baton, and chemical spray. He/She may ride with a P.O.S.T.-certified Officer and assist in making an arrest; however, he/she may not ride alone nor make arrests on his/her own. The Intermediate Reserve Officer will go through an annual evaluation and annual re-certification in firearms and defensive tactics. He/She must work a minimum of 12 hour per month to be in “good standing.” The Intermediate Reserve Officer may also join LARPO and try out for the LPSO Reserve Pistol Team.

Level 3 – P.O.S.T.-certified. Reserve Officers must complete the same training as a deputy, which is 360 hours. This reserve officer has the same duties and responsibilities and authority as a full-time deputy. He/She must comply with all LPSO rules and regulations, must go through annual evaluation, and must go through annual re-certification. A P.O.S.T.-certified Reserve Officer must work at least 16 hours per month to be in “good standing.” If he/she is in “good standing,” then the officer may work paid details. The officer may also join LARPO and try out for the LPSO Reserve Pistol Team.
