Crime Stoppers FAQs

Lafourche Parish Crime Stoppers is a program designed to encourage cooperation between the citizenry and the law enforcement community. It offers the citizens of Lafourche Parish direct and easy access to their law enforcement community and incentive in the form of anonymity and reward.
Citizens who have information relating to crimes, criminal activity or wanted persons (fugitives) can call a 24 hour telephone line, 1-800 SHERIFF. Their information will be taken by a Crime Stoppers operator and forwarded to the proper law enforcement agency.
When a person calls or submits online to Crime Stoppers they are assigned a confidential code number, which becomes their only identity. At no time will anyone ask their name.
After the caller has been given their confidential code number, they are asked to call or submit online updates at a future date identifying themselves by their code number only. Again, no name will be asked. When a person becomes eligible for a reward, all arrangements to receive it are made through the use of their code number as the only means of identification necessary to collect the money, which is paid in cash.
Crime Stoppers is administered by a volunteer civilian Board of Commissioners who oversee the routine business affairs, control the finances, determine reward amounts and the methods of payment.
Lafourche Parish Crime Stoppers, Inc. is a non-profit corporation funded by contributions from the business and private sector and court fines at no cost to the Citizens of Lafourche Parish.
Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and indictment (opposed to conviction) of criminals. The amount of the reward is determined by the Board of Commissioners.
Lafourche Parish Crime Stoppers is affiliated with Crime Stoppers International. The concept originated in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1976. Since that time the program has grown to include over 1,000 programs such as ours throughout the United States and Canada. "Crime Stopper" callers have provided information which has resulted in the solving of thousands of cases and millions of dollars in narcotics and stolen property. The conviction rate of Crime Stopper cases is 97%.
