Martha Woods-Shareef
Born: 1/9/1955  End of Watch: 8/20/2008

On August 20, 2008, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Martha Woods-Shareef, while responding to a burglary call at approximately 2:30 a.m., was struck by a stolen pick-up truck being driven by the suspect she was attempting to arrest.  Deputy Martha Woods-Shareef suffered a broken neck, lacerated liver, collapsed left lung, heart damage and broken ribs to which she succumbed.

Deputy Woods-Shareef had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Department for 15 years. She is survived by her husband and daughter.

Chaney Champagne
Born: 5/23/1958    End of Watch: 7/31/2003

On July 31, 2003, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective Chaney Champagne and his partner  Detective Kurt “Woody” Harrelson were responding to an emergency call for assistance. An elderly woman was trapped in a car that had gone into a canal and the car was beginning to fill with water. For some unknown reason, the detective’s vehicle began to spin out of control and crashed into an oncoming truck.

Detective Champagne and his partner, Sgt. Kurt “Woody” Harrelson, died at the scene.

Detective Champagne had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office for 22 years, and is survived by his mother, two sisters, and four brothers.

Kurt "Woody" Harrelson
Born: 1/29/1972     End of Watch: 7/31/2003

On July 31, 2003, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Detective Kurt “Woody” Harrelson and his partner Detective Chaney Champagne were responding to an emergency call for assistance.  An elderly woman was trapped in a car that had gone into a canal and the car was beginning to fill with water.  For some unknown reason, the detective’s vehicle began to spin out of control and crashed into an oncoming truck. 

Detective Kurt “Woody” Harrelson and his partner, Detective Champagne died at the scene. 

Sergeant Harrelson had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office for over 10 years, and is survived by his wife, son and daughter.

Thomas Proctor
Born: 12/24/42    End of Watch: 5/6/1978

On May 6, 1978, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Deputy Thomas Procter died of a gunshot wound he received after responding to a shoplifting call at a grocery store.  When Deputy Procter arrived, the store security officers had the shoplifting suspect in custody.   As Deputy Procter was gathering information, the shoplifter’s boyfriend appeared and began a  disturbance.

When the officer approached the boyfriend, he was attacked and the suspect was able to gain control of Deputy Procter's sidearm. The suspect then fired one shot, striking Deputy Procter.   Deputy Procter was removed to the hospital where he died two weeks later of his wound.  The suspect was convicted and sentenced to prison.  He was later released and placed on probation.

Deputy Procter had served with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office for 2 years and was survived by his two daughters.
