First DWI Checkpoint of New Year Marks End of National Effort - Sgt. Lesley Hill Peters

First DWI Checkpoint of New Year Marks End of National EffortSheriff Craig Webre announced the first DWI checkpoint of the New Year is planned for this Saturday, January 2nd between 9:00 PM and 3:00 AM in the central part of the parish. “In 2009, we’ve seen changes in driving habits on the highways of Lafourche that have literally saved lives,” said Sheriff Craig Webre. “We certainly want that trend to continue into the New Year,” he added.

To date, the number of people injured in vehicle crashes in the parish is down nearly 15% and the total number of crashes is down nearly 11%. Saturday’s checkpoint will mark the last major effort by the Sheriff’s Office as part of the national crackdown called Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. The initiative began December 16th and will end January 3rd. So far, Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies have made ten DWI arrests as part of that initiative.

As a reminder, there were some changes to Louisiana law pertaining to impaired drivers this year. Motorists suspected of DWI who refuse to submit to a breathalyzer test will lose their driver’s license for one year instead of six months (first offense). For a second offense, the penalty increases from eighteen months to two years. Anyone convicted of a DWI offense while their driver’s license is suspended because of another DWI offense will face automatic prison time.
