Investigation into Counterfeit Money Widens - Sgt. Lesley Hill

Investigation into Counterfeit Money WidensSheriff Craig Webre announced the investigation into counterfeit money being passed in Lafourche Parish businesses has resulted in another arrest. Robert Smith, Jr. (B/M, DOB 4/10/1967, 215 Morristown Road, Raceland) turned himself in Friday afternoon shortly before 5:00 PM to Lafourche Parish deputies. Judge John Leblanc had signed a warrant for Smith’s arrest in connection with an incident July 6, 2010 at Raceland Cash Magic Casino (109 South Service Road, Raceland).

In that incident, three men walked into the casino together shortly before 2:30 AM. Smith, AKA “T-Bob”, gave a cashier five counterfeit twenty dollar bills to change. He received his change, but quickly left after he realized the establishment was onto him. An investigation revealed that Smith had also attempted to pass a phony bill as real at a Raceland convenience store, but the store did not accept the bad bill.

Smith turned himself in at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where he was charged with monetary instrument abuse (R.S. 14:72.2) and an outstanding warrant for failing to appear on a child support issue. Smith remains in jail in lieu of $60,000 bond set by Judge Leblanc. This investigation is believed to be tied to Friday’s arrest of Carl Eschete, Jr. who is believed to be part of a counterfeit operation that produced thousands of dollars worth of the bad cash.
