Sheriff Craig Webre announced two people were arrested in separate incidents within a three hour period overnight for getting behind the wheel of a vehicle when they were impaired. The first incident occurred around 12:30 AM.
Deputies observed a vehicle drive into a restaurant parking lot on Hwy 3235 with its music playing very loudly. As deputies approached the driver, they could smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Andre Callais (W/M, DOB 7-12-1982, 189 West 107th Street, Cut Off) and he was swaying back and forth. Callais failed standard field sobriety tests and was arrested. He refused to submit to a breathalyzer test. Callais was charged with 4th offense DWI (R.S. 14:98.E, driving under suspension due to a previous DWI (R.S. 14:98.3) and loud noise coming from a moveable (Parish Ordinance 15:132). Callais remains in the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on $45,100 bond as set by Judge John Leblanc.
The other incident occurred shortly before 3:00 AM when deputies observed a vehicle driven by Jada Martinez (W/F, DOB 2/17/1967, 142 James Street, Lockport) cross the center line as it travelled northbound on Hwy 3235. Deputies turned on their lights to initiate a traffic stop, but the vehicle turned onto Hwy 657 and continued going, until it finally stopped near Hwy 1. Deputies could smell a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage on Martinez. She failed standard field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest. She too refused the breathalyzer test. Martinez was charged with 2nd offense DWI (R.S. 14:98.C), driving left of center (R.S. 32:71) and having an expired driver’s license (R.S. 32:412). Martinez posted $2,100 bond as set by Judge Leblanc and was released from jail.
