Sheriff Webre Announces 17th Annual Christmas Bike Giveaway

Sheriff Craig Webre announced plans today for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office 17th Annual Christmas Bike Giveaway. The Sheriff’s Office is now accepting donations as well as the names of children who may qualify for the program.

Since the program’s inception, over 2,600 bicycles have been distributed to needy children throughout the area, including 167 last year alone. This was accomplished through the generous donations of local citizens and the hard work performed by Trusties from the Lafourche Parish Detention Center to refurbish used bikes. As in past years, this project is several months in the making as many of the previously owned bikes received for use by the program require cleaning and minor repairs. Once the bikes have been polished and shined, they are housed at the South Lafourche Sub-Station until Santa Claus makes his annual early visit to Bayou Lafourche. This year, Santa is slated to arrive the week before Christmas for the bike giveaway.

“The men and women of the Sheriff’s Office always look forward to this program each year, and it is only possible through the generosity of our local citizens and businesses,” said Sheriff Webre. “Our mission through is to make sure Christmas wishes come true for as many children as possible, especially those needy families whose children have their hearts set on Santa bringing them a bicycle.”

Support Division Commander Captain Dean Savoie manages the program that is eagerly anticipated by local children every year. “It’s heartwarming for all of us,” said Captain Savoie. “It’s always a great feeling to be able to give back to the community, and we get to see the excitement first-hand as the children receive their bikes.”

Members of Explorer Post #323 will act as Santa’s helpers by assisting in delivery of the bikes.

Captain Savoie asks anyone who knows of a child in need to call his office at (985) 632-5843. Callers will need to provide the child’s name, age, sex, address and phone number and other qualifying information. Anyone interested in donating a bicycle for the program can drop off the bike at any of the Sheriff’s Office locations throughout the parish. Bicycles donated after December 1 are asked to be either new or in need of only minor repairs so that they can be ready in time for Santa. Monetary donations are also accepted and are used to purchase new bikes for the giveaway. Donations can be made payable to the Lafourche Parish Deputies Association with a note on the memo line that funds are to be used for the bike giveaway.
