Seatbelt Checkpoint Planned for Saturday, December 17

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced deputies will man a seatbelt checkpoint Saturday, December 17, 2011 in the central part of the parish. Deputies will be checking to make sure all vehicle occupants are properly restrained, especially children.

Per Louisiana State law (R.S. 32:295.1) upon conviction of the first offense the driver faces a $25 fine including court costs, a second conviction carries a $50 fine including court costs and a third and subsequent offense will carry a $50 fine plus court costs.

“These checkpoints are just one of the tools we use to try to keep all drivers and passengers safe on the roads of Lafourche Parish,” said Sheriff Webre. “If someone were to get into an accident, wearing a seatbelt could be the difference between life and death. We want to make sure everyone is obeying traffic laws so that everyone can enjoy a happy and safe holiday season that isn’t marred by an unnecessary tragedy.”
