Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported that a female South Lafourche High School teacher stands accused of engaging in sexual conduct with a 17-year-old male student. Heather Lasseigne Chiasson (W/F, D.O.B. 08/23/1982), of 112 E. 28th Place in Larose, was charged on Friday, January 20, 2012. The Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office is working in conjunction with the Lafourche Parish School Board in connection with these allegations.
After learning about the possibility of an alleged sexual relationship, detectives made contact with the 17-year-old male student on Friday. During an interview with detectives, the student gave a detailed account of the sexual relationship he had with Chiasson, who had taught the student last year. The student alleged that a flirtatious relationship began between the two, resulting in sexual activity, including sexual intercourse. The student also showed detectives numerous text messages exchanged with Chiasson, some of which contained text of a graphic sexual nature.
Detectives attempted to question Chiasson, but she refused to speak to them about the matter. Chiasson was charged with Prohibited Sexual Conduct between an Educator and a Student (RS 14:81.4), a misdemeanor. Penalties for a first offense of this crime include a fine of not more than $1,000.00 or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both.
Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Jo Ann Matthews, said, While I cannot comment on personnel issues, the Lafourche Parish School Board takes very seriously all such allegations and will swiftly act to take appropriate administrative action. She has been suspended from her position with the Lafourche Parish School Board, pending the results of the investigation of the allegations made against her. She added, Once the school districts personnel department and the schools administration complete an investigation, a final determination of her employment status will be announced.
