Detectives Solve String of Thibodaux Vehicle Thefts

Steven Thomas

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported the arrest of a Vacherie man responsible for stealing three vehicles and burglarizing two others last week. Steven Thomas (W/M, D.O.B. 07/08/94) of 21310 Judge Becnel Court, faces three counts of Felony Theft as well as other charges in burglaries, all of which all took place in the Thibodaux area.

The first vehicle was reported stolen on Friday, February 24, when a Thibodaux resident noticed his white pickup truck had been stolen from the driveway of his residence along LA Highway 1. The truck was found abandoned at around 4:30 P.M. Friday afternoon at a convenience store on Highway 20 in Vacherie. Then around 5:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 25, deputies responded to another stolen vehicle complaint on Highway 308 in Thibodaux. This time, the perpetrator had burglarized the resident’s truck parked in the driveway, found keys to a sport-utility vehicle (SUV), entered the resident’s garage, and drove off in the SUV. While investigating at the scene, deputies were alerted to another suspicious vehicle, a pickup truck, in a neighboring driveway. Upon investigating, deputies learned that truck had been stolen from a Thibodaux resident and abandoned in that driveway. Inside the abandoned truck, deputies found a Thibodaux woman’s purse. Upon making contact with the woman, deputies discovered the woman’s purse had been stolen from inside her vehicle parked at another Thibodaux residence.

Through investigation, detectives learned the stolen SUV was located in St. James Parish and made contact with the St. James Parish Sheriff’s Office for assistance. Then around 7:00 A.M., deputies in St. James found the vehicle on Project Road in Vacherie. Through further investigation, detectives were able to identify Steven Thomas as the prime suspect, and with additional help from deputies in St. James, Thomas was found and arrested late Saturday night in Vacherie. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux and booked. Through questioning on Monday and Tuesday, Thomas eventually confessed to all three vehicle thefts, and breaking into the two other vehicles where he found the purse and SUV keys, respectively. Thomas was booked on three (3) counts of Felony Theft, two (2) counts of Simple Burglary and Illegal Possession of Stolen Things (purse). He remains at the Detention Center in lieu of $145,000.00.
