Mother Charged with Murder in Malnourished Infant’s Death

Latisha Thomas

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported a Thibodaux woman has been arrested for Second Degree Murder in the death of her two-month old daughter in February 2012. Latisha Thomas (B/F, D.O.B. 07/04/77) of 1323 Lasseigne Road in Thibodaux was arrested Thursday, April 19, 2012, and is charged with Second Degree Murder following an investigation into the death of her daughter, Angel Thomas (B/F, D.O.B. 12/18/11).

On February 9, 2012, Thomas called 9-1-1 and reported that her two-month old daughter was not breathing. Acadian Ambulance and LPSO Patrol Deputies were dispatched to Thomas’ residence. Upon arrival, EMT’s tended to the infant and found her to be deceased, and her body was transported to the Jefferson Parish Forensic Center for an autopsy.

Last week, detectives were notified of the results of the autopsy which revealed that the infant died of severe malnutrition. Detectives then brought Latisha Thomas in for additional questioning. Through investigation, detectives learned Thomas had not provided adequate nutrition to her daughter prior to her death and that she did not seek any help in dealing with Angel Thomas’ malnourishment.

On Thursday, April 19, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Latisha Thomas on the charge of Second Degree Murder. Detectives made contact with Thomas at her residence that day and arrested her without incident. She was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux and booked accordingly. She is being held on $500,000.00 bond as set by the warrant signed by Judge John E. Leblanc. Thomas’ two other children have been taken into the custody of the State of Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services.
