Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported the arrest of two men during a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 90 on July 17, one of whom had an $800,000 felony warrant out of Texas. Kieran Williams (B/M, D.O.B. 09/07/80) of 121 Trellis Avenue in Chauvin and Bernell Johnson (B/M, D.O.B. 10/10/83) of 3628 Thomas Drive in Houma were both arrested Tuesday afternoon following the stop. Williams is awaiting extradition to Harris County, Texas after the felony warrant for his arrest was discovered.
On Tuesday afternoon, an agent with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force was monitoring traffic on U.S. Highway 90 in the Des Allemands area when he observed a car following another vehicle too closely. There were two occupants in the car which also had a license plate frame covering the license plate registration sticker. The agent initiated a traffic stop on the car, and he made contact with the driver who initially gave a false name and refused to give his date of birth. Eventually, the driver identified himself as Kieran Williams and admitted to having an active warrant for his arrest. As the agent was detaining Williams, the passenger, later identified as Bernell Johnson, exited the vehicle and ran into the nearby marshland along the highway. The agent followed Johnson on foot into the marsh and took him into custody. While bringing Johnson out of the marsh, the agent recovered two white capsules that were floating nearby which tested positive for the presence of cocaine during a field test. The agent also found four more white capsules in the grass near the car, as well as two small bags of suspected marijuana. The agent also observed two more white capsules in plain view inside the vehicle as well as two more small amounts of suspected marijuana. The agent noted the packaging of the drugs was such that they could have been distributed. Johnson admitted the substances found all belonged to him. Both men were arrested and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center for booking.
Williams was found to have an $800,000 felony warrant out of Harris County, Texas, for bodily injury to a child under the age of 15 years, as well as a suspended drivers license. He was booked as per the warrant, as well as with driving under suspension, resisting an officer, and following too closely. He is being held at the Detention Center in lieu of $800,400 bond as set by the warrant and Judge Walter Lanier III.
Johnson was charged with possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, obstruction of justice and resisting an officer. He is being held at the Detention Center in lieu of $60,000 bond as set by Judge Lanier.
