Assumption Parish Fugitive Arrested for Heroin Possession

Emanuel Britton

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported a man wanted in Assumption Parish for aggravated burglary was arrested Tuesday in Thibodaux for heroin possession. Emanuel Britton (B/M, D.O.B. 01/03/79) of 179 Violet Street in Thibodaux was arrested following a traffic stop because he was not wearing his seat belt.

Around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, a patrol deputy working seat belt enforcement observed a vehicle traveling north on Parish Road in Thibodaux with the rear-seat passenger not wearing a safety belt. The deputy initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with the rear passenger. The subject claimed to have no identification with him and gave the deputy what was later determined to be a false identity. While attempting to verify the subject’s identity, the deputy noticed him moving around in the back seat, appearing to shove something into the seat. After failing to discover any record of the name given, the deputy again made contact with the subject and asked him to step out of the vehicle. The deputy then detained the subject until he could be identified. After being detained, the subject properly identified himself as Emanuel Britton and admitting lying about his identity because he believed he had an active warrant for his arrest. The deputy confirmed the existence of a warrant out of Assumption Parish for aggravated burglary and resisting an officer, and Britton was placed under arrest.

At this time, an agent with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force arrived on scene to assist. The deputy and agent made contact with the driver and obtained consent to search the rear seat where Britton had been sitting. They discovered a syringe needle directly behind the rear seat. During this time, they also noticed Britton had been moving around in the rear seat of the patrol unit, again appearing to attempt to shove something into the rear seat. They removed Britton from the unit and discovered a small piece of foil in his hand. After unraveling the rolled-up piece of foil, they discovered a small amount of suspected heroin.

Britton was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked with possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia (3rd offense), resisting an officer, no seat belt and as a fugitive of Assumption Parish. He is being held in lieu of $20,375 bond for the charges in Lafourche Parish, and he is also being held awaiting extradition to Assumption Parish.
