Cut Off Man Arrested for Fourth DWI after Crossing Pontoon Bridge in Reverse

Travis Chouest

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported the arrest of a Cut Off man for his fourth DWI offense after deputies spotted him driving across the Galliano Pontoon Bridge in reverse. Travis Chouest (W/M, D.O.B. 04/21/75) of 264 E. 71st Street was arrested Sunday evening in Galliano following the incident.

On the evening of Sunday, September 23, patrol deputies were directing traffic in the area of East Main Street near East 123rd Street in Galliano when they observed a white pickup truck back out of a parking lot and continue traveling in reverse across the Galliano Pontoon Bridge and onto West Main Street. The truck then continued forward on West Main Street.

One of the deputies followed and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as Chouest, initially refused to stop, entered the southbound lane, and traveled about 300 yards before re-entering the northbound lane. Chouest then finally brought the vehicle to a stop near West 140th Street. The deputy made contact with Chouest and noticed he had a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person. The deputy also noticed an open container of alcohol in plain view in a center cup-holder. The deputy conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, on which Chouest performed poorly. During the course of the stop, the deputy also discovered Chouest did not have auto insurance. Chouest then submitted to a breathalyzer test, and the results showed he had a blood alcohol content of 0.08g%.

Deputies transported Chouest to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked with DWI (4th offense), flight from an officer, reckless operation of a vehicle, having an open container inside a motor vehicle, and no insurance. He is being held in lieu of $55,450 bond as set by Judge Walter Lanier III.
