Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Lockport Police Chief Warren Vedros reported detectives are investigating the homicide of a Lockport mother and her two daughters discovered after authorities responded to a fire at their apartment Sunday morning. The bodies of Jacquelin Gautreaux Nieves (W/F, D.O.B. 11/10/82) and her two daughters Gabriela Nieves (W/F, D.O.B. 12/06/05) and Izabela Nieves (W/F, D.O.B. 02/06/11) were discovered at the scene by deputies and firefighters who responded. Each of the victims was found with at least one stab wound and detectives believe the fire had been intentionally set.
Carlos Nieves Jr. (W/M, D.O.B. 09/28/80), Jacquelins husband and the father of the two girls, has been detained as a person of interest and is currently being questioned in regard to this incident. Investigators have not yet determined if there was a single perpetrator or multiple subjects.
It is a horrific crime any time children are involved, and its even more devastating when its a family, said Sheriff Webre. Then you have the attempt to cover up the crime with arson. Obviously, this is an extremely rare and unique case. We have all the resources of the Lockport Police Department and the Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office involved in this investigation.
This was certainly something that was difficult to wake up to this morning, and we are going to have to come together as a community while we grieve for the family, said Chief Vedros. Its been about 40 years since weve had a homicide in the Town of Lockport.
The victims have been taken to the Jefferson Parish Forensic Center for a full autopsy scheduled for Monday.
