Sheriff Webre Reports Successful “Bike Night” on Friday


Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported the arrest of five individuals during a busy night for bicycle patrol deputies on Friday in Raceland, During a multi-agency organized “Bike Night,” deputies from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office were accompanied by police officers from Thibodaux and Houma for a nighttime patrol in the Raceland area that netted five arrests, including three at a single incident.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday, bicycle patrol deputies were initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of St. Louis Street and Amber Lane in Raceland. The deputies made contact with the driver who was later identified as Kirk Chester (B/M, D.O.B. 11/27/81) of 526 Triple Oaks Drive in Raceland. Deputies also made contact with the passenger, later identified as Devin Nelson (B/M, D.O.B. 06/19/93) of 331 Triple Oaks Drive. Both men were asked to step out of the vehicle, and as they did so, Nelson tossed a small plastic bag to the ground. Deputies recovered the bag and found it to contain suspected crack cocaine. Deputies also found suspected crack cocaine in Chester’s pocket as well as two handguns inside the vehicle. The total amount of crack cocaine recovered was approximately 4.7 gross grams. Both men were arrested for possession with the intent to distribute crack cocaine and illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance. Chester, a convicted felon, was additionally charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, no driver’s license and illegal window tint. Chester is being held in lieu of $77,850 bond while Nelson is being held in lieu of $50,000 bond, both as set by Judge F. Hugh Larose.

While at the scene, Tevin Nelson (B/M, D.O.B. 02/02/95), Devin’s brother, began causing a disturbance. When deputies attempted to contact him, he fled on foot. Deputies caught up with him and placed him under arrest for disturbing the peace and resisting an officer. He was also found to have an active warrant for contempt of court. He was transported to the Detention Center and later released on $1,200 bond.

During the remainder of Friday night’s bike patrol, deputies arrested Jeramie Joseph (B/M, D.O.B. 12/04/81) of 383 Triple Oaks Drive as well as Justin Toussaint (B/M, D.O.B. 09/06/80) of 737 St. Louis Street. Both men were arrested on outstanding warrants for contempt of court and later released after posting bond. The deputies also issued citations to four others for numerous violations including speeding, not wearing a seat belt, open alcoholic beverage inside a motor vehicle, driving under suspension and illegal window tint. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office’s Proactive Police Unit and Patrol Division also assisted at incidents throughout the night providing support in motor vehicle units when necessary.

The 12 “Bike Night” participants included eight deputies from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, three officers from the Thibodaux Police Department and one Houma Police officer. “Bike Nights” are held at least once a month in a predetermined location within the jurisdictions of the participating agencies.
