Sheriff Craig Webre announced plans today for the Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office Annual Christmas Bike Giveaway. The Sheriffs Office is now accepting donations as well as the names of children who may qualify for the program.
In 2011, deputies and Explorers from Post #323 helped deliver 232 bikes to children in need, and they are gearing up for this years special delivery. More than 2,800 bicycles have been distributed to children throughout the area since the programs inception in 1996.
This program continues to be a success thanks to the generous and caring citizens of our community, said Sheriff Webre. We look forward to this annual program as we do our part to make Christmas wishes come true for as many children as possible.
Trustees (inmate workers) from the Lafourche Parish Detention Center also pitch in for several months leading up to the giveaway by refurbishing used bikes. Many of the previously owned bikes received for donation require cleaning and minor repairs. Once the bikes have been polished and shined, they remain housed at the South Lafourche Sub-Station until Santa Claus makes his annual early visit to Bayou Lafourche on the week before Christmas.
Captain Dean Savoie, Commander of the LPSO Support Division, manages the program. We truly appreciate the generosity shown by our citizens through this program, said Captain Savoie. We accept each donation knowing it will bring a huge smile to one childs face a few weeks later and we appreciate the opportunity to witness that excitement when we make the delivery.
Anyone who knows of a child in need is asked to call Captain Savoie at (985) 632-5843. Callers will need to provide the childs name, age, sex, address and phone number and other qualifying information. Due to an already high demand this year, we ask that each familys request be limited to one or two bicycles.
Anyone interested in donating a bicycle for the program can drop off the bike at any Sheriffs Office location throughout the parish. We kindly ask that bicycles donated after December 1 be either new or in need of only minor repairs so that they can be ready in time for delivery. Monetary donations are also being accepted and are used to purchase new bikes for the giveaway. Tax-deductible donations can be made payable to the Lafourche Deputies Association with the words bike giveaway in the memo line.
