Message to Property Owners Regarding 2012 Tax Notices

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Lafourche Parish Assessor Mike Martin are reminding residents that tax notices will soon be mailed out to Lafourche Parish property owners. Typically, by now, property owners would have received their tax notices, but the notices have been delayed this year.

Assessor Mike Martin explained, “Unfortunately, due to 2012 being a reassessment year and the landfall of Hurricane Isaac in our Parish, the Lafourche Parish School Board had to delay their State-mandated requirements to levy their millage rates. I did ask for and received an extension from the Louisiana Tax Commission to file the Parish Tax Roll after November 15 on behalf of the Lafourche Parish School Board.”

“I feel strongly that the education of our children is one of my top priorities and I wanted to help in whatever way possible to ensure that the Lafourche Parish school children get their funding,” continued Martin. “I apologize for any inconveniences this may cause the Sheriff’s Office or the taxpayers, but I hope that anyone would have done the same thing if placed in the same position. Although the tax roll was received by the Tax Commission for approval on November 20, the Commission is not conducting a meeting until November 27th due to the Thanksgiving holiday. The Parish Tax Roll will therefore be presented to the Sheriff on November 28. As always, anyone can call my office with any concerns.”

Property taxes become delinquent after December 31, 2012, with interest accruing at a rate of 1% per month, until paid (LA R.S. 47:2127). Due to the delays in getting the tax notices sent to property owners, Sheriff Webre has decided to grant a “grace period” for tax payers by allowing payments to be made interest free through January 31, 2013. All payments not received by that time will accrue interest at the normal rate.

“We certainly appreciate the considerate taxpayers of Lafourche who have had questions regarding this issue,” stated Sheriff Webre. “Once we receive the Tax Roll, we will certainly work diligently to mail the notices out to property owners as quickly as possible.”

Once tax notices are received by property owners, payments can be made through mail, online at, or at LPSO office locations and area banks as will be detailed in each tax notice. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will release further details regarding the payment process at the time notices are sent out. Questions about individual tax assessments should be directed to the Lafourche Parish Assessor’s Office.

In 2011, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office sent out 36,086 tax notices to property owners owing a collective total of over $94 million. Of that number, 14,200 owners were homestead exempt and owed no taxes. These property taxes help fund all aspects of public service in the parish such as roads, drainage, levees, law enforcement, fire departments, hospitals, ambulance services, schools, and recreation.
