The Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office and Fletcher Technical Community College announced an agreement has been reached to offer Sheriffs Office employees the ability to pursue an associates degree in Criminal Justice. The first classes are slated to begin in January 2013.
Our agency puts a strong emphasis on education, said Sheriff Craig Webre. We encourage our employees to better themselves by offering incentives such as increased pay and promotional consideration. We are excited about our new partnership with Fletcher Technical Community College, and I believe it will help lead to an even higher level of public service.
The purpose of the agreement is to provide a quality academic program to the employees of the Sheriffs Office for the purpose of preparing individuals for employment, career advancement, and lifelong learning. The partnership will increase contact between the faculty and the Sheriffs Office to be able to fully utilize facilities and expertise of those in the law enforcement field. This will also help keep the faculty abreast of new law enforcement techniques to incorporate into lessons.
Fletcher Technical Community College Chancellor Travis Lavigne said, “By actively developing partnerships such as this one with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, Fletcher continues to fulfill its mission while engaging in community and workforce development.”
The Lafourche Parish Sheriffs Office will pay tuition and required fees provided the employee maintains a C average. Upon completion of the program, the employee would receive an Associate of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the college.
This agreement is part of an updated Career Development Program for Sheriffs Office employees. In addition to the program at Fletcher, employees are also able to similarly seek a bachelors degree, masters degree or doctorate in selected fields through Nicholls State University or any other university approved by LPSO Administration.
