The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office, in partnership with the Lafourche Parish District Attorney's Office and the State of Louisiana 17th Judicial District Court, is reminding citizens about the start of the Warrant Amnesty Settlement Period on Monday, June 2. During the amnesty period, individuals with qualifying outstanding warrants will be able to pay the fines, fees and costs associated with the warrants to avoid arrest. A list of all individuals with qualifying warrants has been posted HERE. Approximately 10,000 warrants are eligible.
The Lafourche Parish Warrant Amnesty Settlement Period, or "WASP," allows the parish criminal justice system to resolve warrants proactively while affording citizens the opportunity to make payments and avoid arrest. Most misdemeanor warrants will be eligible and may be satisfied by paying fines, fees and costs associated with the warrant. The bench warrant fee of $150 will be waived for those paying during the amnesty period.
Sheriff Craig Webre is encouraging all citizens to check the list on the website. "Even if your name is not listed, you may discover that a family member or friend is listed, and you can inform them about the amnesty period,” said Sheriff Webre. The list will be updated at least once daily during the amnesty period to reflect all changes from the previous day. “If you want your name off the list, you can come in on Monday, June 2 – the very first day – and your name will be removed within 24 hours,” said Sheriff Webre. “Remember, we are not publishing this list to embarrass anyone. On the contrary, we are trying to save citizens from future embarrassment of arrest when they least expect it.”
Beginning Monday, June 2, anyone with a qualifying warrant per the online list can pay their fees, fines and costs at any of four LPSO locations:
- Lafourche Parish Detention Center: 952 Highway 3185, Thibodaux
- South Lafourche Sub-station: 102 West 91st Street, Cut Off
- Administrative Office: 200 Canal Boulevard, Thibodaux
- Criminal Operations Center: 805 Crescent Avenue, Lockport
The Lafourche Parish Detention Center and South Lafourche Sub-station will remain open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week during the amnesty period, which lasts through June 30. The Administrative Office and Criminal Operations Center will extend their office hours from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays during that period and will also open on Saturday, June 7 and Saturday, June 14 from 8 a.m. to noon.
Fines, fees, and costs may be paid by cash or money order at all aforementioned locations. Residents of Lafourche Parish only can pay by check if the warrant is not related to an NSF check. Payments can be made by credit or debit card at all locations EXCEPT the Criminal Operations Center in Lockport. Payments can also be made over the phone using a credit or debit card, but the name on the card MUST match the name on the warrant, and there is a 3% convenience charge for all telephone payments.
On July 1, 2014, Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office deputies will begin proactively seeking those with outstanding warrants who have not taken advantage of the amnesty period.
Citizens should be aware that this amnesty period affects only those warrants issued by the 17th Judicial District Court, and does not apply to warrants issued by municipal courts.
