Sheriff Craig Webre announced several individuals were arrested during Friday’s seat belt and DWI checkpoints. The seat belt checkpoint began around 5 p.m. and was conducted in the 3400 block of LA Highway 1 in Raceland. The DWI checkpoint began later Friday night and was conducted along LA 1, just north of the Champagne-Harrelson Memorial Bridge in Raceland.
During the seat belt checkpoint, two motor vehicle inspection sticker violations led to four arrests. The first incident occurred around 5:45 p.m., and resulted in the arrest of Donald Livas (age 33) and Michael Diggs (age 33) of Houma. As Livas drove through the checkpoint, deputies noticed the inspection violation and detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle’s interior. Through investigation, deputies found Livas to be in possession of 144 grams of marijuana, 2.2 grams of cocaine, a pistol, drug paraphernalia, and an open container with an alcoholic beverage. Diggs, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was found to have an active warrant for Thibodaux City Court. Another passenger, Damien Jackson (age 34) of Houma was issued a citation for an open container and released. Diggs and Livas were both transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux. Diggs was booked on the aforementioned warrant for contempt of court which carried a one-day sentence, and he was released on Saturday evening after completion of the sentence. Livas was booked with Possession with Intent to Distribute Marijuana and Cocaine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of an Alcoholic Beverage in a Motor Vehicle, and Illegal Carrying of a Weapon in the Presence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance. He is being held in lieu of $15,350 bond. He is also being held for Terrebonne Parish due to outstanding warrants.
The second incident occurred around 7:15 p.m. when another driver was stopped for an inspection sticker violation. During the stop, deputies discovered one of the passengers, Joey Dorsey (age 30) of Lockport, had six outstanding warrants for contempt of court. Another passenger, Billy Nance Jr. (age 35) of Houma was found in possession of 10 doses of Suboxone and a small amount of marijuana. The driver was issued a warning for the inspection sticker and released. Nance and Dorsey were transported to the Detention Center, and upon arrival, correctional officers discovered Nance to have suspected methamphetamine in a small plastic bag inside his sock. Nance was booked with Possession with Intent to Distribute Suboxone, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, and Taking Contraband to a Penal Institution. He was released after posting $11,300 bond. Dorsey was booked on the six warrants, and his bond is set at $25,000. He has also been ordered to pay $1,344 in fines in costs related to five of the contempt warrants.
During the DWI checkpoint, at around 1 a.m., deputies made contact with a driver and noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. Deputies identified the driver as Mallory Plaisance (age 19), and the passenger as Bryan Gamez (age 20), both from Abbeville. Gamez and Plaisance were found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and Gamez was also in possession of a pistol. Plaisance was issued a summons for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Gamez was placed under arrest and booked into the Detention Center on charges of Possession of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia, as well as Illegal Carrying of a Weapon in the Presence of a Controlled Dangerous Substance. He was released after posting $5,550 bond.
During the seat belt checkpoint, a total of 1,457 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, and deputies reported 10 seat belt violations and 13 other various violations. During the DWI checkpoint, a total of 1,655 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, resulting in 10 traffic violations and one DWI charge. Kassie France (age 35) of Raceland was issued a criminal summons for DWI (1st Offense).
