Two Men Charged in Lockport Shooting Incident

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the arrest of Yaswanta Lawson (age 32) and Chester Lawson (age 24), both of Lockport, on Sunday, February 7. At around 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, deputies received a report of shots fired at a vehicle in the Rita community in Lockport. Through investigation, deputies learned four individuals were traveling in a vehicle on East Lafourche Street when an SUV stopped in front of them. At that time, two men identified as Yaswanta and Chester Lawson allegedly exited the SUV and fired multiple rounds toward the other vehicle, some of which hit the ground near the vehicle. None of the rounds struck the vehicle, nor the occupants. Deputies canvassed the area attempting to locate the Lawsons, but they were unable to do so at that time. Then on Sunday afternoon, deputies made contact with Yaswanta Lawson and questioned him about the incident. Deputies also made contact with Chester Lawson who was observed walking on the street nearby. Both men were placed under arrest and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux. Each was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Firearm. Yaswanta was additionally charged with Illegal Use of Weapons or Dangerous Instrumentalities and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and he was also found to have an outstanding warrant for Contempt of Court. Chester Lawson’s bond was set at $100,000. Yaswanta Lawson’s bond was set at $200,000.
