Raceland Man Arrested for Striking Two Women with a Stick Following Domestic Incident

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the arrest of Bernell Lawson (age 60) of Raceland on multiple charges following a domestic disturbance early Saturday morning.

At around 1 a.m. on Saturday, November 5, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 200 block of Brocato Lane. Upon arrival, deputies observed a male and a female in the middle of the street struggling over a wooden stick. Deputies attempted to separate the two parties, and initially made contact with the male subject, later identified as Bernell Lawson. Lawson began resisting deputies violently before being detained. Deputies then made contact with the female subject who they learned was trying to take possession of the wooden stick after Lawson had allegedly used the stick to strike her sister multiple times. Deputies made contact with the victim and learned she and Lawson were involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical when the woman attempted to leave. Lawson allegedly struck the woman in the head with his fist several times. The incident took place in front of the woman’s child who is under the age of 13. The victim was able to exit the residence, but Lawson followed her, picked up a wooden stick outside the residence, and struck her with it multiple times. As the victim’s sister tried to intervene, Lawson also struck her with the wooden stick.

Lawson was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked with two counts of Aggravated Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Domestic Abuse Battery with Child Endangerment, and Resisting an Officer with Force or Violence.
