Investigators Arrest Georgia Man on Conspiracy Charges in Connection with a Scam

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced detectives have made an arrest as part of an investigation into a scam. Diego Diaz, 47, of Georgia was arrested after being caught trying to accept thousands in cash from a scam victim.

On December 10, 2024, an elderly Thibodaux man contacted the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office about a scam. He had received notification of an online purchase that had been made through Walmart for a dishwasher. The man contacted Walmart which had no record of the purchase and was informed the notification was likely a scam. He then received a call from a person claiming to be from the Federal Trade Commission who claimed to be investigating money laundering. He told the elderly man that in order to keep his money safe, he should withdraw $40,000 to be picked up by investigators and put into safekeeping. Investigators worked with the victim to coordinate a pickup at 10 a.m. the following day.

On December 11, the elderly man was provided detailed instructions from the scammer on how to package the cash to provide to a courier. Maintaining surveillance at the location, investigators observed the courier arrive, and he was immediately taken into custody. He was identified as Diego Diaz. Further investigation revealed Diaz had acted as a courier in similar transactions in other areas as well, and is associated with a larger criminal organization that spans the southern United States.

Diaz was booked into the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex on charges including conspiracy to commit extortion, conspiracy to commit felony theft, and conspiracy to commit exploitation of the infirmed. He is being held without bond on these charges, and he is also being held for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. This investigation is continuing with cooperation from neighboring parishes where similar incidents have occurred as well as in cooperation with federal authorities.

Sheriff Webre reminds citizens to always be skeptical of any calls they receive asking for money or trying to “protect” their money as part of a larger investigation. “Anytime someone suggests you not tell anyone, even law enforcement, what is happening and asks you for money, you can bet it’s a scam,” said Sheriff Webre. “We were fortunate to arrest someone appearing in person, but in most cases, everything is done electronically, and once money is sent, it is difficult – if not impossible – to recover. We strongly encourage anyone to contact local law enforcement for help before exchanging money.”

Student Charged for Bringing Replica Pistol to Elementary School in Thibodaux

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Jarod Martin announced an 11-year-old boy has been charged after school resource officers discovered he had brought a replica BB pistol to C.M. Washington Elementary School.

School resource officers opened an investigation on Thursday, December 12 after another student reported the boy had brought a firearm to school. It was determined that he did not have a firearm in his possession, but he admitted bringing a replica pistol to school at some point in November 2024. The replica BB pistol was turned over to deputies and found to be a replica of a Glock 17 handgun. The student was charged with violating Louisiana R.S. 14:95.2 which prohibits carrying a dangerous weapon onto school property. He was then released to the custody of a relative.

“I am once again reminding parents that these types of guns are extremely dangerous,” said Sheriff Webre. “Aside from the obvious injuries they can cause outright, these pistols are nearly indistinguishable from a firearm, especially in the split-second in which someone would be faced with one. We urge everyone to refrain from using these in public settings and to modify the pistol so that it does not look like an actual firearm.”

Superintendent Martin said, “The Lafourche Parish School District is committed to the safety of all of our students and staff. The presence of any weapon of any kind on school grounds will not be tolerated. There will be severe consequences from the school district and law enforcement for anyone who brings any type of weapon onto our campuses.”

“The student who came forward and reported this incident is to be commended,” Martin added. “Please remind your students that they should immediately report anything suspicious to an adult on campus.”

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over During the Holidays

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is joining other local law enforcement agencies in participating in the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign which will take place December 13, 2024 runs through January 1, 2025. The campaign is coordinated and funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

Throughout the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign, additional deputies will be assigned to saturated patrol efforts to target impaired drivers and help keep motorists safe.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, one person is killed, on average, every 39 minutes in a drunk-driving crash. This totals more than 13,000 lives lost each year.

Sheriff Craig Webre reminds citizens to have a plan to get home safely before deciding to drink. Never drive if you have had anything to drink containing alcohol. Remember that driving under the influence of illegal narcotics can also lead to a DWI arrest. In fact, some legal medications can impair your ability to drive. Always read warning labels and instructions on prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Sheriff Webre Announced Plan for “Click It Or Ticket” for Thanksgiving Week 2024

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office will join other local law enforcement agencies in participating in the Click-It or Ticket campaign which runs from November 23-30, 2024. This campaign is coordinated and funded by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

During the busy Thanksgiving week, millions of Americans will hit the roads, eager to spend time with family and friends. It is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and it is important to follow critical safety practices when traveling, like wearing a seat belt.

During the campaign, additional deputies will be assigned to saturated patrol efforts. They will be focused on ensuring vehicle occupants are properly restrained, including child seats.

According to the Center for Analytics and Research Transportation Safety at LSU, more than half of the drivers and passengers who died in motor vehicle crashes last year were not properly restrained. During the Thanksgiving holiday alone, 454 were injured on Louisiana roads in 2023. Since 2019, 54 people in Louisiana have died in crashes during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Click It or Ticket is a seat belt enforcement campaign aimed at increasing the national seat belt usage rate. Sheriff Craig Webre asks for patience and cooperation when passing through these checkpoints and for recognizing the importance of raising awareness for safety issues.
