Buckle Up in Your Truck: Seat Belt Checkpoint Planned for April 22, 2026

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office is joining other law enforcement agencies in participating in the Buckle Up in Your Truck campaign,  April 18-26, 2026. The campaign is coordinated and funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

As part of this effort, additional deputies will be assigned to patrol to ensure the safety of everyone on our roadways. Deputies will also conduct a seat belt checkpoint in Lafourche Parish on April 22, 2026. During this checkpoint, deputies will be checking motorists for seat belt and safety seat violations, as well as for proper inspection tags and other potential violations. Checkpoints are designed to help raise awareness for these types of violations and make the highways of the parish safer for all motorists.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 22,713 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in 2024, and nearly half of those killed were not buckled. Buckling up helps keep you safe and secure inside your vehicle, whereas not buckling up can result in being totally ejected from the vehicle in a crash, which is almost always deadly. Airbags are not enough to protect you. In fact, the force of an air bag can seriously injure or even kill you if you’re not buckled up. Also, improperly wearing a seat belt, such as putting the strap below your arm, puts you and your children at risk in a crash.
