Detectives Recall Warrant, Release Golden Meadow Man Who Initially Confessed to Murder

Sheriff Craig Webre announced investigators have recalled a warrant for the arrest of a Golden Meadow man for Second Degree Murder after no evidence was discovered against him in the death of 64-year-old Wayne Matherne. Cameron Sands (age 25), who was arrested November 6, 2016, was released from jail on Friday. Murder charges remain for Dayton Duet (age 20) in the case.

The investigation into Matherne’s death began on Friday, November 4, 2016, when a meal-delivery worker arrived at Matherne’s residence and found him to be unresponsive. Deputies and other emergency responders proceeded to the scene where Matherne was later pronounced dead. Investigators discovered Matherne to have head trauma, including several lacerations on the top of his head. On Friday, November 6, Sands met with detectives who questioned him about Matherne’s death, and he told detectives he was responsible for striking Matherne which resulted in his death.

The following day, detectives began investigating the death of another man, 78-year-old Stanley Gisclair, and developed Dayton Duet as a suspect. During questioning, Duet confessed to the murder of both Gisclair and Matherne.

Through further investigation, detectives proved Sands was not involved in Matherne’s murder. They found no physical evidence nor any evidence to support Sands’ confession.

Detectives recalled Sands’ warrant for Second Degree Murder, and he was released from the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on Friday, January 13. Dayton remains in jail and is charged with Second Degree Murder in the death of Wayne Matherne, and First Degree Murder in the death of Stanley Gisclair.

Two Arrested after Agents Discover Meth Lab During Probation Compliance Check

Sheriff Craig Webre announced agents discovered a meth lab at the address of Norma Savoie (age 50) of Larose during a probation compliance check on Tuesday. Savoie was arrested Tuesday along with Reba Rich (age 29) of Raceland.

At around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, agents with Louisiana Probation and Parole were conducting a compliance check on the residence of Norma Savoie who is currently on probation. Upon arrival to the residence, agents located a suspected methamphetamine lab in an ice chest outside the residence. Agents with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force responded to investigate. The Lafourche Parish Combined Meth Lab Response Team was also called to the scene to process the meth lab.

Meanwhile, narcotics agents made contact with Savoie and another woman, Reba Rich, inside the residence. They obtained a search warrant for the residence and discovered several items associated with the production of methamphetamine. They also discovered drug paraphernalia and several pills available only by prescription which agents determined belonged to Rich.

Savoie and Rich were arrested and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux. Savoie was booked with Creation or Operation of a Clandestine Laboratory for the Unlawful Manufacture of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, and her bond is set at $50,000. Rich was booked with two counts of Possession of a Legend Drug and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and her bond is set at $8,000.

DWI Checkpoint Planned for Thursday, January 12

Sheriff Craig Webre announced deputies will conduct a DWI checkpoint beginning during the evening hours of Thursday, January 12 and continuing into the early morning hours of the following day. During the DWI checkpoint, deputies will be looking for drivers who are possibly impaired while checking for other traffic safety issues.

Sheriff Webre reminds citizens to designate a driver if you are going to drink. Motorists suspected of DWI who refuse to submit to a breathalyzer test will lose their driver’s license for one year (first offense). For a second offense, the penalty increases to two years. Anyone convicted of a DWI offense while their driver’s license is suspended because of another DWI offense will face automatic prison time. Lafourche Parish is also a “No Refusal” parish, meaning if a suspected drunk driver refuses a breathalyzer test, deputies will seek a search warrant to have that person’s blood tested.

Houma Man Arrested for Rape in December Now Faces Charges in Lafourche Parish

Sheriff Craig Webre announced additional charges for a Houma man arrested last month for rape. Talon Collins (age  20) now faces charges in Lafourche Parish including Felony Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile.

Houma Police received a report of an alleged rape on December 20, 2016. Following an investigation, detectives found that Collins had forced a male relative to have sex with him. With the assistance of detectives from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, Collins was located and arrested on December 21, and he remains at the Terrebonne Parish Jail. Through further investigation, Lafourche detectives found Collins had also had sexual relations with a male relative at a residence in Lafourche Parish. Following their investigation, detectives obtained a warrant for Felony Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile.

Collins is being held on $200,000 bond in Terrebonne Parish, and he is now also being held for Lafourche Parish for warrants for Felony Carnal Knowledge of a Juvenile and Contempt of Court.

Store Employee and Customer Arrested after Conspiring to Skip Items during Checkout

Sheriff Craig Webre announced a store employee and customer were arrested on several counts of shoplifting after conspiring to have the employee skip items during checkout. Kayla Billiot (age 20) and Michelle Parks (age 41), both of Larose, each face multiple counts of theft following the incident.

On the morning of Friday, January 6, deputies responded to a Cut Off department store regarding a shoplifting complaint. Upon arrival, deputies learned an employee, Kayla Billiot, was purposefully not scanning some items while checking out a particular customer, Michelle Parks. Through investigation, deputies learned were a total of 13 transactions in November and December 2016 in which Billiot skipped items during scanning of Parks’ merchandise. They also learned Parks became aware of Billiot skipping items after the first instance, and both colluded to steal the items 12 other times in November and December 2016. Deputies made contact with Billiot and Parks, and both admitted to their involvements in the crimes.

Billiot and Parks were transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux. Parks was booked on 12 counts of Theft by Shoplifting. She was released on the morning of Sunday, January 8 after posting $12,000 bond. Billiot was booked on 13 counts of Theft by Shoplifting. She was released Sunday night after posting $13,000 bond.

Fugitive Captured After Jumping into Bayou in Lockport

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the arrest of Timothy Bellanger (age 26) of Mathews on Wednesday, January 4. On Wednesday afternoon, agents with the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force obtained information about Bellanger’s whereabouts. Bellanger had three active warrants for Contempt of Court for failure to appear in court for a child support hearing, as well as prior charges of Possession of Methamphetamine and Marijuana. Agents proceeded to the location near the bank of Bayou Lafourche in the area near Linda Street in Lockport. Upon arrival, agents immediately observed Bellanger and attempted to make contact with him. Bellanger immediately jumped into the bayou in an attempt to escape from agents who lost sight of him momentarily. Other deputies arrived to help search for Bellanger, and he was later found hiding near the new saltwater control structure. Bellanger was taken into custody and transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked on the aforementioned warrants for three counts of Contempt of Court. He was additionally charged with Resisting an Officer and Possession of Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia. His bond is set at $32,000.

Seat Belt Checkpoint Moved to Thursday

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the seat belt checkpoint originally scheduled to occur during the daytime hours of Wednesday, January 4 in Lafourche Parish has been postponed until Thursday, January 5. During the checkpoint, deputies will be checking motorists for seat belt and safety seat violations, as well as for proper inspection tags and insurance. These weekly checkpoints are designed to help raise awareness for these types of violations and make the highways of the parish safer for all motorists.

TRAFFIC UPDATE: LA 308 Now Open; US 90 Also Back Open Following Closure

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced LA 308 in the Lockport area is now OPEN to vehicular traffic after being closed for more than 11 hours Wednesday due to an overturned tanker truck.  ‬

Additionally, U.S. Highway 90 was closed in both directions for a period of time Wednesday evening due to a three-car crash in the 3600 block. All lanes of travel are now open.  ‬

Sheriff Webre wishes to thank the public for their patience and cooperation as responders worked tenaciously to clear both roadways.

Man Arrested after Striking Another Man with a Bottle Outside a Chackbay Bar

Sheriff Craig Webre announced the arrest of James Landry (age 34) of Thibodaux on January 1, 2017. Deputies responded to a disturbance at a bar in Chackbay just before 11 p.m. on Friday, December 30. Upon arrival, deputies learned three male subjects were attempting to start fights with other patrons throughout the night. They were eventually asked to leave the premises. Once in the parking lot, one of the men, identified as James Landry, struck a man with a glass bottle in what appeared to be an unprovoked attack. This led to several other patrons coming to the victim’s defense which resulted in a large fight. Shortly after the fight began, Landry was seen entering a vehicle and fleeing the scene. The victim was treated at a local hospital having suffered a broken bone on his face. Following an investigation, deputies obtained a warrant for Landry’s arrest for the charge of Aggravated Battery with a Dangerous Weapon. Then on January 1, deputies made contact with Landry at a family member’s residence in Thibodaux, and he was taken into custody. He was transported to the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux where he was booked on the warrant for Aggravated Battery with a Dangerous Weapon. His bond is set at $20,000.
