Inmates Moved to the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex

LPCC
Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced the new Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex is now operating after inmates were moved from the Lafourche Parish Detention Center on January 18, 2019. Over 240 inmates were moved in the span of two hours with no incidents to report.

Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex staff and inmates are adapting to the new operation of a “direct supervision” facility. For inmates who require a higher level of security, there are standard two-person cells in the Special Housing Unit of the complex.

The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office has also begun returning inmates to Lafourche Parish who have been housed in Catahoula Parish. This transition will continue this week until all Lafourche Parish inmates are returned to the parish and housed at the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex.

“A new era of corrections has begun in Lafourche Parish,” said Sheriff Webre. “The Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex not only provides increased security for our employees and inmates, but it affords us an incredible opportunity to rehabilitate offenders before they are released back into society. I thank each individual who had a hand in planning this project and seeing it to this point. I especially thank the voters who recognized the need for this new facility. We have not taken this responsibility lightly.”

The Lafourche Parish Detention Center will be closed and all access turned over to Lafourche Parish Government. Parish officials have said there are no definitive plans yet for the Detention Center.

Teen Attempts to Flee Traffic Stop with Loaded Gun and Marijuana

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced a 15-year-old male has been charged following an incident in Larose last week. The juvenile was found to have a loaded handgun and drugs in his possession during a traffic stop.

Just before 7 p.m. on January 17, 2019, narcotics agents conducted a traffic stop on a car with no license plate in the 13300 block of East Main Street in Larose. Agents made contact with the driver who had an expired temporary tag for the vehicle, and she claimed she was still waiting on the license plate from the dealer. Agents issued a warning to her for the violation.

During the stop, agents detected the odor of marijuana coming from the front seat passenger, a 15-year-old male from Galliano. As agents conducted a pat-down of the juvenile, he began to reach for his waistband. Agents stopped him, but he was able to turn away, and he began to flee on foot. As agents pursued, the juvenile again reached for his waistband. At that moment, an agent deployed a Taser, and the juvenile fell to the ground. As he did, a handgun dropped from his waistband. The juvenile continued to resist, but he was taken into custody.

Agents noticed the serial numbers on the handgun had been obliterated. It was found to be loaded with a round in the chamber. During a search, the juvenile was found to have approximately 8 grams of suspected marijuana in his possession and over $400 in cash. No other contraband was found inside the vehicle. The male teen was transported to the Lafourche Parish Juvenile Justice Facility in Thibodaux. He was charged with Resisting an Officer with Force or Violence, Illegal Possession of a Firearm by a Juvenile, Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Mark, and Possession of Marijuana.

Lafourche Parish School Threats Found to Not Be Credible

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre and Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent Dr. Louis Voiron Jr. reported several school threats have been investigated, and at this time, none have found to be credible. Detectives began investigating threats Tuesday evening, and the investigations continued into Wednesday.

On the evening of Tuesday, January 15, rumors began swirling on social media about a possible threat of a shooting at Bayou Blue Middle School. Through investigation, detectives found that a student had reportedly made a drawing that included an object which could have been perceived as a gun. Ultimately, the report was investigated, and no credible threat was found. Out of an abundance of caution, additional security measures were in place Wednesday morning.

Then on Wednesday, January 16, deputies received reports of rumored threats of possible shootings at several Lafourche Parish schools. Upon further investigation, investigators found these threats were similar to an incident in Terrebonne Parish in which a Houma Junior High School student was arrested Wednesday morning. Similar messages began circulating with only the name of the school changing on each. At this time, no threats involving Lafourche Parish schools have been deemed credible.

Sheriff Webre said that while these threats are alarming, he is not surprised to see a rash of threats following Sunday’s arrest of a Thibodaux High School student. Cameron Boudreaux, 18, was arrested for allegedly making direct threats to students that he would kill them by bringing a gun to school.

“In the past, upon making an arrest involving a school threat, we tended to see ‘copycat’ incidents over the next few days or weeks,” said Sheriff Webre. “I want to assure the community that we are working with the Lafourche Parish School District to ensure the safety of the students and faculty. Every threat is considered credible until proven otherwise, and we will fully investigate any and all threats that arise.”

Investigators are also aware of “Facebook challenges” which encourage students to make threats of school violence or run away from home. Sheriff Webre warns these “challenges” have serious consequences.

“This is not a game,” said Sheriff Webre. “Making a threat of this nature will result can result in an arrest and criminal charges that will follow you for the rest of your life. There is no level of anonymity that can protect you. For years, we have worked closely with social media outlets to identify those responsible, and we will continue to do so.”

Sheriff Webre said additional deputies or investigators may be seen at Lafourche Parish schools over the next several days, but he stresses that it is simply out of an abundance of caution for the safety of students and faculty.

Lafourche Parish Schools Superintendent, Dr. Louis Voiron stated,  “District and school level administrators have been working with LPSO throughout these incidents and continue to do so. Any threats of violence will be taken seriously and proper action taken accordingly. We encourage parents and guardians to have a conversation with their children regarding the seriousness of making threatening statements of any form either on or off campus. We also ask that you discuss the importance of reporting anything heard or seen in social media to a school or law enforcement official immediately.”
