Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre announced a Thibodaux man faces several charges for an incident that led to a standoff with law enforcement on Saturday. An arrest warrant has been obtained for Paul Johnson, 53, of Thibodaux, who is currently hospitalized for evaluation but was not injured in the incident.

At around 11:15 a.m. on August 8, 2026, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in the 500 block of Parkside Drive in Thibodaux. Johnson was reportedly having a mental episode and damaging items inside the residence. Further investigation revealed Johnson had chased a family member in the residence while armed with a handgun. When deputies arrived, they learned Johnson reportedly had threatened to take his own life. Deputies were able to get other family members safely out of the residence, but Johnson refused to exit.

The Lafourche Parish Interagency Crisis Management Unit was activated and responded to the scene in an attempt to safely negotiate with Johnson to exit the residence. After approximately 8 hours, Johnson exited the residence, and he was safely taken into custody. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
Upon his release, Johnson will be booked on a warrant for domestic abuse aggravated assault, false imprisonment while armed with a dangerous weapon, illegal use of weapons, and simple criminal damage to property. Bail will be set at $610,000.

Sheriff Webre praised the efforts of deputies who responded. “I am extremely happy with this result,” said Sheriff Webre. “Our deputies understood that a man’s life was at stake, and they did everything they could to prevent him from taking his own life. It was a very hot and long day, but they accomplished the mission with no injuries. A man is still alive today because of their actions.”
